David Mallett (formerly referred to as “Dave”) is a hugely talented singer/songwriter from Maine. He wrote “The Garden Song” (“Inch by inch, row by row”) that’s been recorded by so many folks (Pete Seeger, Arlo, PP&M, etc.). One of my favorites of his is “I know this place” which has the opening lines
“I know this place, I know it well,
Every sound and every smell,
And every time I walked I fell,
The first two years or so.”
One of the greatest singer-songwriters of the tradition. In “The Fable True” he has melded passages of Thoreau’s “The Maine Woods” in his soft-spoken cadence to his remarkable sense of music.
